The Father Who Asked Jesus for Help Believing

A reflection on Mark 9:24

“Immediately the boy’s father cried out, ‘I do believe; help my unbelief!’”
MARK 9:24 · BSB

Read the whole story: Mark 9:2 to 29.

Your child kneels by the bed and prays for the same thing again.

You have been praying for it too. For months. Maybe years. And somewhere along the way you stopped expecting anything to change.

You still bow your head. You still say amen. But inside you wonder whether you are teaching your child to talk to a ceiling.

That is a lonely place for a father to be.

Pay attention to where this story sits. Just before it, Jesus took Peter, James, and John up a high mountain, and they saw Him transfigured, His clothes shining whiter than anyone could bleach them. They heard the Father’s voice from the cloud: “This is My beloved Son. Listen to Him!” (Mark 9:7).

Then they came down the mountain into chaos.

A crowd. Religious scholars arguing with the other nine disciples. And in the middle of it, a father with a son who had suffered since childhood. The father describes how the spirit had thrown the boy into fire and into water to destroy him (Mark 9:22). Every parent reading that knows what those years must have been like. Never sleeping well. Never leaving him near the cooking fire. Never letting him near the water.

And he had already tried Jesus’ disciples. They failed. These were the same disciples who, a few chapters earlier, had been sent out and “drove out many demons” (Mark 6:13). This time, nothing.

So by the time the father reaches Jesus, his hope is worn thin. “But if You can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.”

Notice the word “us.” His son’s suffering was his suffering.

Jesus repeats his words back to him: “If You can?” Then, “All things are possible to him who believes!”

And the father cries out the most honest prayer in the Bible. I do believe. Help my unbelief.

Jesus healed the boy. Not because the father finally worked up enough faith. His faith was weak and divided, and he said so. The power was in the One he believed in.

Afterward, the disciples asked privately why they could not do it. Jesus answered, “This kind cannot come out, except by prayer” (Mark 9:29). The disciples had been leaning on past success. The father had nothing left but a desperate cry to Jesus. Of the two, the father’s prayer was the one that reached Him.

That does not mean every prayer you pray will be answered the way that father’s was. Some will not, and Scripture does not hide that.

But your doubt does not disqualify you from coming. Paul writes, “if we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself” (2 Timothy 2:13).

You can keep bringing Jesus the faith you have, even if it is mostly questions. He did not turn that father away.

What is the prayer you have quietly stopped believing God will answer? Write it down, and write what you would say to Him about it if you were completely honest.

Jesus, I do believe. Help my unbelief. Amen.
